The Fastest Clock in the Universe
In this project I designed 10 costumes for a stage production of the play The Fastest Clock in the Universe by Phillip Ridley, which was being performed at Nottingham College by second year theatre students. The play has 5 characters: Cougar Glass, Captain Tock, Cheetah Bee, Foxtrot Darling and Sherbert Gravel; it all takes place in a flat above an abandoned fur factory in East London. There are no costume changes throughout the play, so I have decided to design 5 naturalistic designs and 5 more surreal ones to give me a range of costumes for my portfolio. The play is part of the In-Yer-Face theatre genre that emerged in the 1990s, which is a confrontational style of theatre that is designed to shock the audience by the extremism of its language, images and morals. The story follows Cougar who is celebrating his 19th birthday party, but is actually 30; he has invited a schoolboy (Foxtrot) to seduce and possibly kill. However, Foxtrot brings his pregnant girlfriend to the party who derails the situation as she can tell Cougar is lying.
